SERIES DESCRIPTION:

This series will feature venture funds that are run by universities that invest in university startups. Each webinar will feature universities and they will talk about their experiences of managing an in-house fund to foster better understanding of this timely topic as it helps bring about commercialization and entrepreneurship.

ABOUT THIS WEBINAR:

Many universities are facing the challenges of building a robust innovation and commercialization ecosystem to infuse technology into the marketplace.

The speakers will describe two of Mtech’s (www.mtech.umd.edu ) eighteen effective programs at the University of Maryland which act to facilitate support of the innovation economy.

Tech Push:VentureAccelerator (www.va.umd.edu) is a fast-track program that guides faculty and student technology entrepreneurs in rapidly developing companies based upon their inventions.

Tech Pull: The Maryland Industrial Partnerships program (www.mips.umd.edu) is a fund that supports university-based research projects to help Maryland companies develop technology-based products. Commercial products benefiting from MIPS projects have generated more than $23.6 billion in revenue, added thousands of jobs to the region, and contributed to successful products.

These two approaches work effectively to fill the commercialization gap, and round out the innovation ecosystem in areas of the greatest needs: company launch and proof of concept funding.
