This series will feature venture funds that are run by universities that invest in university startups. Each webinar will feature universities and they will talk about their experiences of managing an in-house fund to foster better understanding of this timely topic as it helps bring about commercialization and entrepreneurship.
ABOUT THIS WEBINAR:
The MIT Deshpande Center celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. It was one of the first university “proof of concept” centers. During that period it has funded 90+ projects and spun out 26 companies that have raised around $400 million. What is the process that the center has followed, what lessons have been learned, and what are the challenges for the next 10 years?”
ABOUT THE PRESENTER:
Leon Sandler Executive Director, Deshpande Center for Technological Innovation Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Leon Sandler is the Executive Director of the Deshpande Center for Technological Innovation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and position he has held since 2006. The Deshpande Center’s mission is “Innovation to Impact” – stimulating innovation and moving technology from the laboratories to the marketplace. In his role at the center, Leon Sandler spans the worlds of academia and industry, technology and business, established companies and entrepreneurial start-ups. Since 2002 the Deshpande Center has funded 90 projects at MIT and seen the creation of 26 startup companies that have raised over $400 million.
Leon brings to the Deshpande Center more than twenty-five years experience in senior general management, marketing, finance and business development roles at companies such as Boston Consulting Group, Eastman Kodak, Texas Instruments and Digital Equipment. He has also served as the CEO of several start-ups and has assisted many ventures as an interim executive or advisor. He holds a bachelor of science and masters of Science in Chemical Engineering from Natal University in South Africa, and a MBA from the Stanford Business School.
