I am licensing a software product through tech transfer. Can't patent b/c the idea has been previously published in trade journal. Can I and should I copyright the code itself, or anything else you'd recommend?

The code is "copyrighted" without any additional formalities, however, you can register your copyright with the copyright office, which I suggest that you do. Your TTO can probably assist you in doing that.
