Interest: The dollars are continuing to flow into the renewable energy sector, in investments of all types and in government funding. Financial activity in renewables is strong and trending upward, despite questions of uncertain subsidies and rapidly changing costs. In the third quarter of this year, total corporate funding in the wind energy industry totaled $2.4 billion, according to consulting firm Mercom Capital Group. That funding includes venture capital, public market financing, and debt financing.

Interest: Eastern Illinois University will open a new Center for Clean Energy Research and Education on Friday. The university said in a news release Tuesday that the 5,000-square-foot building will be home to a research facility where faculty and students can experiment with biomass as a fuel. That includes a lab and a lab-scale gasifier to turn plant matter into fuel.

Interest: More innovations coming out of the University of Washington could reach commercialization thanks to a new grant from Washington Research Foundation (WRF). Xconomy reports today that the WRF plans to assign a $30 million, five-year grant that will help attract researchers to several programs at the UW — ranging from the Clean Energy Institute to the Institute for Protein Design — and encourage them to move their ideas from the lab to the real world.
