Interest: University of Michigan's Office of Tech Transfer reported this week that 368 new inventions were reported in the fiscal year 2012, which ended in June, comfortably eclipsing last year’s then-record total of 332.

Interest: Startups tend to be discreet when they're raising money. Often it's because entrepreneurs are universally paranoid about revealing any details of their business. But there's also a very real reason to keep things hush-hush: the Securities and Exchange Commission has a ban on "general solicitation," left over from the days when crooks would go door to door selling imaginary oil fields to the gullible and overly optimistic.

Interest: First Round Capital, a seed-stage venture firm, has launched an experimental new fund focused entirely on college campuses. Based in Philadelphia but slated to expand to other states if successful, the $500,000 Dorm Room Fund is unique because once it is set up, the students themselves will choose which start-ups get funded.

Interest: The University of California, Berkeley’s Skydeck incubator for student start-ups, has a decidedly un-student like feel. The incubator, which Haas School of Business, Berkeley helped establish and fund, occupies the penthouse suite of the tallest building in downtown Berkeley, with premium office space and views over San Francisco Bay.

Interest: PHOENIX – Matt Gottesman, who co-founded 10XMultiple.com, a company offering a due-diligence analytics platform, is looking for two things to put his business in a better position: seed funding and additional technologies. That’s why he is submitting an application for AZ Furnace, a startup incubator initiated by Arizona State University’s SkySong business innovation center in Scottsdale. Interest: Through the new program, $500,000 has been allocated to provide funding in amounts starting at $10,000 up to a maximum of $50,000 each to researchers with promising ideas that may lead to developing patents or intellectual property. Interest: KVZ Sports, a startup from Arizona State University’s Edson Student Entrepreneur Initiative, has received $160,000 of seed funding from MAC6, a Tempe-based business incubator, the company said Thursday. KVZ Sports provides athletic wear and accessories associated with extreme winter sports. Its products are sold in resorts nationwide, and company officials said they currently are developing a number of retail-oriented brands, all to be made in America.
